An ice cold Moscow mule in hand and my camera in the other, my mind and body were prepared to indulge in a night of music.
Iconic and legendary group Public Enemy serenaded a packed house at La Villita downtown.
Chuck D had some choice words for Donald Trump and asked the audience , “Why is it that the Spurs get no love everywhere else?” The crowed immediately roared back and began chanting for the love of their Spurs.
Although their performance was iconic, the coup d’etat of the evening was Flavor Flav slapping the bass.
Public Enemy fought the power and had the Alamo City at its heels singing along to many of their classic hits.
Saturday was overcast and cloudy. Rain was supposed to gush from the skies and had fans wondering if they would be able to see The Octopus Project and The Flaming lips.
I sat and watched as tourists, people walking by, and fans sat at the Arneson River Theatre as The Octopus Project began to take the stage.
River Walk barges passed trough as The Octopus Project do what they do best, provide an insane mix of experimental rock and roll to a matching light show.
The Octopus Project set the stage on fire.
As I walked out to get in line to see The Flaming Lips, I saw the reactions of the crowd and facial expressions with a happy disbelief as The Octopus Project concluded their set.
I walked to the closed off area of the Maverick Music Festival grounds at La Villita and was not prepared for the set of the evening that would make many, myself included, jump around and become one with their performance.
To set the tone of the evening, lead singer Wayne Coyne released a giant balloon that read, “Fuck Yeah, San Antonio!” before jumping into an enigmatic night of psychedelic rock.
At one point, Coyne crowd surfed and sang in a giant transparent ball. The crowd roared and San Antonians became one with The Flaming Lips as they delivered the performance of the evening.
Maverick Music Festival 2016 was one for the record books.
